A federal appeals court dismissed a lawsuit brought by nonprofit group Citizens for Objective Public Education alleging that Kansas State Science Standards promote atheism, claiming they failed to show a harm in including evolution and climate change as key scientific concepts among the standards.
The case, COPE v. Kansas State Board of Education, covered whether or not the new science guidelines promote objective curricula. The appeals court ruled that they did, especially noting that districts don’t have to adopt objectionable standards and are still free to teach origins theories that don’t include evolution.
