Drafting a Grant

Download or contact the grant administrator to obtain the grant proposal form. Some grants may recommend or require a letter of intent. Researching the grant’s website and speaking with the grant administrator will help you understand a foundation’s goals when granting funds. As a rule of thumb, foundations are focused on impacting the community most efficiently.

Your grant proposal should make a strong case for how funds will be used to reach the foundation’s goals in your community. Facts and figures on your community and the program you’d like to fund strengthen your argument more than anecdotes or abstract philosophy. The writing should be concise and clear to anyone who has no background knowledge of your situation or the science program you want to fund.
