Program Design

Although our program topics vary, there are certain things that we incorporate into each program. It is our experience that children benefit from a combination of structured and unstructured learning. We use an interactive approach that allows children to explore topics and ask questions while requiring no prior knowledge. Throughout all of our programs we ask students to share their experiences and observations about the topics at hand. Each child's contribution is valued and encouraged as we experience science together. Having developed and refined our methods over hundreds of sessions, we feel this is the best way to interest and involve children. Our programs feature teacher-coached group learning coupled with independent construction and testing. Because it is our experience that success is often a cooperative effort, we encourage cooperation in every class and teamwork where appropriate. When possible, our programs also emphasize the importance of conservation and social responsibility as consumers and scientists. Most of our activities use common and recycled materials to convey the overlooked potential of every day items. Through the use of recycling and unconventional associations KnowAtom gives students an opportunity to develop creativity and a respect for global resources.
